The chief is wearing his traditional HAIDA hat. It is known as a Frontlet. There are 3 birds in this painting. The eagle and raven which represent the 2 Haida clans. The flicker is behind the Chiefs head and is flying straight up– This bird is the communicator bewtween heaven and earth....according to ancient Haida mythology
